Extra security for Breeders` Cup

The world`s finest thoroughbreds battling it out at Saturday`s Breeders` Cup at Belmont Park will be subject to increased security after last month`s attacks on nearby New York city, race officials said.

'There`s definitely added security,' Terry Meyocks, New York Racing Association (NYRA) president confirmed. 'Both in the grandstand and in the back stretch where the barns (stables) are. There`ll be police and other agencies.'

But safety fears have failed to deter connections of international stars such as Fantastic Light of Dubai`s Godolphin team and Irish champion Galileo from showing up for the biggest day in the world racing calendar.

Race fans are expected in good numbers too, despite U.S. jitters caused by the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and now followed by the anthrax scare.

'Ticket sales are holding up pretty well,' said Eric Wing of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA).

'There have been some cancellations, maybe a few hundred, as people decide not to travel to New York, but we still expect a crowd of 45-50,000 people.'

Race fans can expect extra safeguards. 'The NYRA is working with all local law enforcement agencies and security has very much been heightened,' said the NTRA`s Wing.

'All bags will be checked and no coolers or umbrellas will be allowed. Fans will want to anticipate a little extra time getting in although it should not restrict the enjoyment of the day.'

Rain rather than safety fears would be more likely to keep fans away.

'When numbers were down a little at the last Breeders` Cup it was because the weather was terrible that day,' said Wing.

Saturday`s forecast is for cold, but dry conditions. - Reuters
